Insiders Predict HUGE Weekend for Spider-Man at the Box Office
This is the weekend that Marvel fans have been waiting for for quite some time! Spider-Man: No Way Home will make its debut this weekend at the box office and according to insiders, the future is looking bright for the film!
According to a piece in DEADLINE this morning, the film is expected to earn a mighty $130 million at the domestic box office where it will screen in over 4,325 locations. Previews start tomorrow (Thursday, December 16th) as early as 3pm in the afternoon. Some are suggesting the film may take in even more than original predictions with the film pulling in as much as $175 million – $200 million.
With Thanksgiving behind us, and over a week to go before Christmas this is the perfect time to capitalize on the 18-34 year old market. The movie is also doing exceptionally well with critics and early audiences and currently has a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Should this hold, it gives the film the distinction of being the best reviewed live-action Spider-Man movie to date!
As DEADLINE tells us, Sony’s biggest domestic opening belongs to 2007’s Spider-Man 3, which made $151.1M during the first weekend of May. Could Spider-Man: No Way Home surpass this?
Insiders seem to be leaning more toward the opinion that this is likely. Estimates are based on pre-sales for the film which, as we previously reported here at MickeyBlog are at record levels. Advance tickets sales are running 20% ahead of Rise of Skywalker and 35% behind Avengers: Endgame. This is a big deal as Endgame holds the distinction of being the biggest domestic box office opening of all time raking in $357.1 million.
When it comes to overseas projections, the film is expected to bring in between $160- $180 million. This week it will roll out in big markets including Korea, UK, France, Russia, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Netherlands, India and Span. No opening date has been given for China as of yet and it is predicted that it won’t open there until some time next year.
This is a release that the movie industry will be watching closely as cinemas have yet to return to business akin to pre-pandemic levels. Even pessimistic predictions have the film bringing in $290 million. But the pendulum could swing the other way and as DEADLINE reminds us, it could be on track to earn $380 million which would be a HUGE jump for box offices in a post-pandemic world.
We think you’ll agree that whatever way you look at it, the optics are good for the film!
