Celebrate 50 Years of Fort Wilderness
Let’s celebrate 50 years of Fort Wilderness by taking a look back at historic photos of the resort!
Did you know that Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is one of the original three resorts of Walt Disney World?
It’s true! Fort Wilderness opened on November 19, 1971.
(Hint: the other two original resorts were the Polynesian Village Resort and the Contemporary Resort.)
The campground offered spaces for recreation vehicles and tents, giving families a way to enjoy nature while at Disney World.
It was very important to Walt Disney that Walt Disney World would have enough land to expand the parks and on-site hotels.
He learned the hard way when he couldn’t get more land for Disneyland.
Fort Wilderness was important to Walt Disney because of his love of the American frontier. That was the inspiration for the campground.
After 50 years, Fort Wilderness is still an amazing place for families to vacation.
You can find deer, rabbits, ducks and armadillos roaming the Resort’s 750 acres of pine and cypress forest.
There are charming woodland trails, spectacular pool areas and spectacular entertainment at this picturesque backcountry retreat.
Today you can camp in a tent, camper or cabin – whatever suits your fancy. Great for larger parties, fourtypes of campsites accommodate everything from tents to 45-foot and longer RVs, with a maximum of 10 guests per site
Fort Wilderness features a pool with waterslide! Make a splash at Meadow Swimmin’ Pool on the corkscrew waterslide, and relax in the whirlpool spa.
