It’s true! Fort Wilderness opened on November 19, 1971.
(Hint: the other two original resorts were the Polynesian Village Resort and the Contemporary Resort.)
The campground offered spaces for recreation vehicles and tents, giving families a way to enjoy nature while at Disney World.

It was very important to Walt Disney that Walt Disney World would have enough land to expand the parks and on-site hotels.
He learned the hard way when he couldn’t get more land for Disneyland.
Fort Wilderness was important to Walt Disney because of his love of the American frontier. That was the inspiration for the campground.
