Beacon of Magic, A Beautiful Spaceship Earth
At the beginning of this month on October 1, 2021, Walt Disney World began The World’s Most Magical Celebration. The parks’ four icons donned their Beacon of Magic, and now we have details of what makes Spaceship Earth’s so spectacular.

Spaceship Earth’s Beacon of Magic at EPCOT quickly became a Guest favorite. In fact, many believe you must experience it when you visit Walt Disney World for its 50th anniversary.

Guest promptly post videos and pictures to social media, over and over again, as this beautiful structure comes to life. But, how did they create such gorgeous magic on Spaceship Earth?
Zach Riddley asked these very questions to the Imagineering lighting designers to determine the design and capability of the system. Therefore, Jason Read and Galen Lande provided the answers with a few fun facts!
Impressive Technology
First, Spaceship Earth’s system generates more than 30 million lumens of light. That is equivalent to more than 35,000 light bulbs in case you are curious.

Additionally, lights from fourteen locations beam onto the structure, along with the integrated LED fixtures. Apparently, the designers were given artistic flexibility in order to blend colors. Therefore, the end result achieved Spaceship Earth’s classic color gradients.
Also, they installed approximately 60 miles of cable for Spaceship Earth’s Beacon of Magic. Impressively, that’s enough to wrap around EPCOT’s World Showcase Lagoon more than 45 times.

Finally, there are about 2,000 fixtures with almost 12,000 side-firing beams to create the starburst effects. These effects are what put Guests in shock and awe.
