EPCOT Celebrates Its 39th Birthday!
Amidst all of the excitement surrounding Magic Kingdom and the 50th anniversary celebration starting today, EPCOT is celebrating its 39th birthday! Epcot opened on this day back in 1982.
The 21st century came to life when Disney World opened, what was then called, EPCOT Center. Walt Disney had a very specific vision for an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) which was first announced in 1974 by Card Walker (pictured above, then president of Walt Disney Productions).
EPCOT has been through many changes over the years and is currently going through a major overhaul. Some of those changes were revealed 2 nights ago after the debut of Harmonious. Even though EPCOT isn’t the center of the celebration like Magic Kingdom is, they still received some enhancements for the 50th anniversary. If you happened to miss it the other night, Spaceship Earth has a new lighting enhancement called Beacons of Magic.
Lights shine from within Spaceship Earth’s reflective panels as stardust emerges to symbolize beacons of possibility and optimism. It’s a beautiful transformation. Spaceship Earth truly comes alive with this new light display.
The lights change from color and intensity. The lights are set to a moving score as the lights dance along to the music.
You can catch the new Beacons of Magic light show at EPCOT everyday starting around dusk and running every 15 minutes or so.
