Disney on Broadway Presents Benefit Concerts
It has been a while since Disney on Broadway has performed onstage; however, you may hear some of your favorite Disney songs performed live sooner than later. Recently, it was announced that Disney on Broadway presents Live at The New Am: A Benefit Concert for The Actors Fund for which Disney on Broadway stars will conduct four performances.
The Benefit Concerts
Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer of Disney Theatrical Productions, believes New Yorkers are eager for the theatre. Schumacher said, “The Lion King and Aladdin return to Broadway in September, but these four concerts allow us to welcome fans back to Broadway even sooner and give us a chance to raise much-needed funds to support the heroic work being done by the remarkable staff at The Actors Fund. We cannot wait to return to the exhilaration of musical theatre. For the first time in forever, we actually can.”
The benefit concerts celebrate the reopening of Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre. In addition, it honors the support provided by The Actors Fund to members of the entertainment industry throughout the pandemic. The Actors Fund provided more than 16,450 entertainment professionals with $22 million worth of grants since March 2020; therefore, the increase was more than 1000% over their typical grant support.
Joseph Benincasa, President & CEO of The Actors Fund, believes the concerts will provide even more people with needed help. Benincasa said, “Over the past 25 years…[Disney Theatrical Productions’] partnerships have helped promote and support our many programs and services that provide vital assistance for our performing arts and entertainment colleagues, who are in need now more than ever.”
Disney on Broadway Stars
Ashley Brown from Mary Poppins, Michael James Scott from Aladdin, Kissy Simmons from The Lion King, and Josh Strickland from Tarzan will perform on July 22-24, 2021 at 7:30 pm, as well as July 25, 2021, at 2:00 pm. The concert features beloved Disney songs, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World,” and “Circle of Life.”
Michael James Scott describes the experience as a dream come true. He appreciates presenting the benefit concerts alongside his closest friends and Disney on Broadway family. Scott said, “There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how excited and honored I am to get to be part of this historic reopening of Broadway and the legendary New Amsterdam Theatre…Did I mention I’m excited?”
Also, Brown, Scott, Simmons, and Strickland will make an appearance on Stars In The House tonight (July 7, 2021) at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT. This live talk show, hosted by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley, raised more than $1 million for The Actor Fund.
