Popular Broadway Shows Including ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Hamilton’ Announce September Return
It’s been just about 15 months since popular Broadway Shows in New York City including The Lion King and Hamilton went dark due to the ongoing Covid pandemic. It was announced earlier this month that these shows could start making their way for a comeback. Today, on Good Morning America, it was announced that these shows, as well as Wicked, will make their official return on September 14!
“it’s kind of indescribable,” said L. Steven Taylor, star of Disney on Broadway’s The Lion King. “That moment already in Circle of Life is an iconic moment and from pride rock I have a different special viewpoint. My favorite thing to do is stand on pride rock and watch all the grown men cry. From Rafiki’s opening call, it’s really a call for the community to come together and I feel like that’s what this is symbolic of, Broadway coming back is it’s really a community coming back and making New York really start to go.”
Broadway along with New York City was hit especially hard by Covid. A total of 31 Broadway shows were shuttered back in March of 2020 and a whopping 97,000 Broadway employees lost their jobs due to the shutdown.
In addition, to the people who worked directly with these productions many restaurant owners near the Great White Way were also impacted substantially with no productions going on and dining capacity limits in place.
Once Broadway does return in September, Guests can expect a safe and secure experience when it comes to Covid guidelines.
Krystal Joy Brown of the hit Broadway production and Disney+ film, Hamilton, said; “A lot of work was put in to find ways to make the theater an environment that complies with COVID-19 guidelines.”
Stars returning to Broadway this September are also “making sure that the theater is a space that is equitable and inclusive.”
“Something we got to do with the social justice arm of our company was to find ways to create safe spaces in the theater and push for more openness and inclusivity, from the HVAC system to the HR system,” said Brown, who helped create the Hamilton Racial Justice Task Force to push for change in society and in the theater to create a more equitable future. “We’re creating a more diverse Broadway that will reflect back to our audiences in these beautiful historic houses.”
Tickets for several Broadway productions that are set to return to the big stage in September are currently on sale.
