A Cruella Sequel? Major Trade Sites Say, “Yes!”
Cruella debuted just before the Memorial Day weekend, but apparently, Disney is looking for more Dalmatians…
I am totally down with this.
Cruella rocked. Everyone in my family enjoyed it. The noir-ish beats kept me intrigued, and the Emmas cinched it as my favorite movie of the year (thus far).
But did I expect that sequel buzz would happen for the flick in just 10-days (or so)?
No. No, I did not expect that talk so quickly.
However, that is exactly what is happening, and major Hollywood trade “papers” are saying Cruella II is already in the works.
Cruella II: In The Works
The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit and Aaron Couch posted:
Late Friday scoop: Disney going back to the dogs, throwing a sequel to #Cruella into early development. Dirwctor Craig Gillespie & screenwriter Tony McNamara expected to return. W/ @AaronCouch https://t.co/1nC5bve8SO

Dalmatians are proving to be Disney’s new best friends.
As Cruella heads into its second weekend, The Hollywood Reporter has learned the studio behind the Emma Stone-starrer is in early development on a sequel. Cruella director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for a sequel to the film that stars Stone as fan-favorite One Hundred and One Dalmatians villainess Cruella de Vil.
Cruella debuted May 28 simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ under the streaming service’s Premier Access tier, making it available to purchase for $30. The film has earned $48.5 million globally. It received positive reviews and has been praised for its 1970s punk rock aesthetic.
All I can say is, “Fabulous.”
I mentioned earlier that I really enjoyed the movie. And you can read all about that in my review.
That posted, it’s not like my own praise for the film was echoed universally.
However, there’s a combo of buzz and money behind Cruella, which has Disney’s attention.
Coming Soon?
Both THR and EW.com posted quotes from an unnamed Disney spokesperson (from a release).
We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date… the film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”
And now, by “a long run,” it seems Disney means another film.
That’s fine with this guy, as long as the sequel isn’t as bat-poop crazy as the follow-up to the equally kick butt Maleficent. Yep, you remember that, don’t you? [Shudders]
Anyway, this is a developing story so keep it here, and we’ll bring you the latest.
What did you think of Cruella? Do you think it deserves a sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
