Disney Gives Update on Inclusion Policies Allowing Cast Members to Have Visible Tattoos and Other Changes
Last year, it was announced that the Walt Disney Company would be changing it’s longstanding Four Keys philosophy that set the tone for Guest Service within the company for the past 65 years. The original Four Keys were Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency. Since then, the firth key of Inclusion was added. Disney has just announced that they will be expanding the Inclusion key by allowing Cast Members to express themselves and their culture with modifications to their dress code policy that allow for visible tattoos and other changes.
With Disney’s new approach on Inclusion, Cast Members will now have more flexibility around their appearance and personal expression while at work. This includes gender-inclusive hairstyles, jewelry, nail styles, and costume choice as well as visible tattoos. Disney has stated, “They are updating them to not only remain relevant in today’s workplace, but also enable our cast members to better express their cultures and individuality at work.”
Disney is also working on other ways to strengthen their fifth key of Inclusion directly in Disney Parks around the world. Just recently, enhancements have been announced to the Jungle Cruise and the re-imagination of Splash Mountain into New Adventures with Tiana. To celebrate the diversity of Guests and Cast Members alike and collaborations with creators, new experiences like The Soul of Jazz exhibit has been added to the American Adventure inside EPCOT at Walt Disney World.
Outside of the Disney Parks, Disney continues to look for ways to support and uplift their communities with programs such as the Disney Dreamers Academy mentor-ship programs. Disney is also working on adding more diverse companies to their supply chain with even more ways to support diverse vendors with more announcements coming soon.
The five keys of Disney are used as a blueprint my all Cast Members in their decision making and know by heart around the word. They are used to guide everyone in the Walt Disney Company as they interact with Guests, collaborate, create the future of Disney products and experiences, and make critical decisions about the future of their business.
With Inclusion at the fifth key, Disney is striving to cultivate an environment where all people are welcome and appreciated for their unique experiences, perspectives, and cultures. They desire to be known as a company with diverse views and ideas sought after such as critical contributions towards the collective success of everyone involved.
But, these changes and the addition of Inclusion as the fifth key is just the state of what Disney hopes will be a more diverse and inclusive Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products division. Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products stated, “The world is changing, and we will change with it, and continue to be a source of joy and inspiration for all the world. We’ll never stop working to make sure that Disney is a welcoming place for all. I’m excited about where we’re headed, and we’ll have more to share soon. Thank you for joining us on this journey.
