Disney Will Not Replace Outgoing Compliance Chief
As the dust settles on the first wave of layoffs at the Walt Disney Company, we are starting to get a better idea of how the company will be structured in the future.
One role that will not be replaced, is chief complaisance officer Alicia Schwarz.
Schwarz was laid off, along with another top legal executive, Marvel’s John Turitzin, as Disney continues to shed jobs in an a “push for profitability”.
A Change In Legal
Schwarz had been with Disney for over a decade, before being tapped as “global chief compliance counsel” in 2020. The next year, she was chosen to succeed compliance chief Jacob Yellin on his retirement.
According to reports, Disney general counsel Horacio Gutierrez will take over Schwarz’s duties
Gutierrez came to Disney last year from Spotify Technology Sa. He replaced the company’s longtime legal chief Alan Braverman.
Court Battle On The Horizon?
Interestingly, with Disney and the State of Florida wrestling over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a legal battle may be on the horizon for the company.
Following the revelation that Disney had preemptively stripped the newly created Central Florida Tourism Oversight District of its power, the board retained the Washington DC based firm Cooper & Kirk.
While Disney and Florida have net yet gone to court, it is likely that the company is gearing up for just such a contest.
