A Behind the Scenes Look at the Stormtrooper First Order Star Destroyer Room in Rise of the Resistance
Can you believe it’s been over a year since the uber-popular Rise of the Resistance attraction opened in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World? One of my favorite parts of the attraction is the First Order Star Destroyer hangar, or commonly known as the Stormtrooper Room, all Guests pass through before heading off to fight the First Order as the Resistance on the ride.
To celebrate the one year anniversary of the attraction, Disney Parks photographer, Matt Stroshane, shared some behind the scenes photos of the Stormtrooper First Order Star Destroyer Room before the attraction opened to Guests and how he managed to capture all the magic of the area after taking thousands of photos.
First off, do you know how many Stromtrooopers are actually in the Stormtrooper First Order Star Destroyer Room in Rise of the Resistance? If you guessed 50, you are correct! To convey the awe that Guests experience when they enter this larger-than-life room, Stroshane used wide-angle lenses and then swapped in telephotos lenses to investigate all of the details of the large lot of Stormtroopers.
Stroshane also waited for just the right moment for a passing Star Destroyer to pass on the massive “screen” in the back of the room as the backdrop behing the Stormtroopers.
Escorted by a Walt Disney Imagineer, Stroshane, was able to walk among the Stormtroopers to give viewers a new perspective that he knew he would never be able to duplicate once the attraction opened to the public.
Stroshane’s favorite photo taken that day, is the one above that was taken from the center of the Stormtrooper First Order Star Destroyer Room. He got down on his flat stomach and held his camera as low as possible to increase the Stormtrooper’s reflections in the black, shiny floor. From that angle, he was able to make them appear taller – and more intimidating – while still given viewers a view into space behind.
Stroshane hoped that giving Guests this new perspective, he is able to emphasize some of Rise of the Resistance’s storytelling details and the feelings Guests first experience when they come face-to-face with this room full of Stormtroopers!
