Check Out The Awesome Ways Animal Kingdom Caretakers Interact With The Animals
With Walt Disney World vacation packages now bookable through December of 2021, there’s never been a better time to start planning your Disney getaway. And if you do make it to Walt Disney World, be sure to spend at least a day checking out the incredible inhabitants that call Disney’s Animal Kingdom home!
There are over 5,000 animals in Disney’s care and the Animal Care Team comes up with unique ways of engaging with the animals!
There’s a new episode of National Geographic’s Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom out today on DIsney+ where viewers will be treated to a bird’s eye view of the creativity Disney’s animal experts use to make magic happen for the animals!
Just like people, it’s important that animals get a chance to take a break from everyday life. With that in mind Disney has come up with special enrichment experiences like playtimes that offer special treats! The team is also devising ways of giving back to the animals! This could be something as introducing new food items like popcorn. As you can see from the image above, the Mandrills love it!
They’ve even introduced pumpkin spice perfume to the cat habitats and are working with the animal nutrition center to come up with frozen treats that can be served up on super-hot days!
Introducing these activities allows animals to explore and interact with their surroundings and also demonstrate behaviors and traits specific to the species. One example is the big cats sharpening their claws. ANother are gorillas actually climbing to get food. Keeping the Animal Kingdom inhabitants stimulated maintains their sense of wellbeing.
Check out Sumatran tiger Sohni’s reaction to some lemongrass that animal keeper Susan and her team arranged to be added to the tigers’ home on Maharajah Jungle Trek.
And it’s a learning experience for the animal care team as well. This gives them a chance to observe the animals and to make notes on what types of food and activities each species likes. An example can be taken from the clip above when Susan wants Sohni to enjoy new things in her habitant and has an idea that she’ll probably love rolling around in lemongrass.
Enrichment is happening all around for the animals you see at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT. And if you can’t make it to the parks soon then you can check out the Magic Of Disney’s Animal Kingdom on Disney+NOW!
