Patents Show Disney Drones Being Used In Live Performances
Disney using drone technology isn’t new, the company has been using these little robots for a while now in performances. However, the theme parks may be looking to big up their use of drones according to recent patents filed.
According to a recent piece in DronedDJ, Disney Enterprises Inc. recently filed patents for an “Aerial Show System Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Energy To Animate Creative Show Celement.” The accompanying illustration shows drones being used to move objects on a stage.
And as you can see from the image above, these aren’t just ANY objects. The one in the illustration looks like a Pirate Ship!
As DronedDJ points out, there was an abstract accompanying the patent request which outlines how the drones would work together in conjunction with ground-based systems that are all controlled through a central system. This system would track the drones to make sure that they hit their mark. Closer inspection of the image even shows how the downdraft from the drones in the images above can even be used to move the masts of the ship giving the prop and incredibly realistic feel!
If you saw the Starbright Holidays at Disney Springs a few years back you’ll remember that Disney used drones to create holiday images in the night sky. However, they’re looking to advance the technology and according to the patent, the ground-based systems are an important step forward.
It will be interesting to see how Disney employs this technology at the theme parks in the years to come. We’ll be watching this story closely so keep following along with us here at MickeyBlog for the latest Disney-related news and updates.
