A New Haunted Mansion Movie Is In The Works
According to a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is taking another stab at a Haunted Mansion film. Katie Dippold best known for writing the recent all-female Ghostbusters reboot as well as The Heat is writing a feature based on the ride.
Rideback (the banner for producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich) will produce the film. The company is best known for their recent remake of Aladdin. We’re also told that the film will be live-action.
The Haunted Mansion made its debut at Disneyland theme park in 1969 and was an immediate success. As most of you will know, theme park guests go inside a creepy manor where there is are a wide array of supernatural frights. The attraction also features a ton of awesome characters from Madame Leota and the Bride to the hitchhiking ghosts!
The attraction was turned into a 2003 movie which was directed by Rob Minkoff and starred Eddie Murphy. As The Hollywood Reporter tells us, the Eddie Murphy version took a really broad approach to the material. The film wasn’t really a hit with audiences or Disney enthusiasts. Disney has struggled with getting the tone for Haunted Mansion just right. They need to make sure it’s scary enough while still being family friendly.
Though they failed to do this with the original film, it is something they have pulled of as of late- most notably with successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Next year will also bring a movie version of Jungle Cruise which will star Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
It will be really interesting to see what Dippold’s take on the story will be. We expect that there will be some laughs there as she was previously a writer on Parks and Recreations, the new Ghostbusters was full of humor as was her film Snatched starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn.
