Find Out What The Future Holds For These Upcoming Disney Attractions
One of the big questions we here at MickeyBlog HQ have had since the COVID-19 crisis but a massive damper on the theme park industry is what the future holds for DIsney’s theme park projects on both coasts. From a Mary Poppins ride to a brand new Avengers Campus, so projects get the greenlight while others suffer. With last weeks earnings report, we know that theme park income is massively down which means naturally that Walt Disney Imagineering is going t need to reevaluate many of their plans for updated rides and attractions.
According to a recent piece in CinemaBlend, Walt Disney Imagineering head Bob Weiss was recently interviewed by D23 where he confirmed that some attractions are naturally getting pushed back. During the interview he said that both the TRON coaster at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland’s Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be among those being slowed down.

Weiss said, “While several projects, like Avengers Campus—at both Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris—are able to surge forward based on where we were in development, there are others that will be picked back up in stages—like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and TRON—and some that are longer-term that we will need more time to assess.”
As CinemaBlend points out, what Weiss means by stages is not totally clear. However, we can assume that both of the projects will move forward, just to at the same pace as before COVID-19. This also means that they may not open as soon as originally attended.
Now let’s take a look at projects we know are happening at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland
Projects Being Delayed at Disneyland and Disney World
Walt Disney World:
- TRON Lightcycle Power Run (Magic Kingdom) – Looks like 2021 still happening but perhaps later in the year.
- Spaceship Earth (EPCOT) – Disney has postponed this project.
- Mary Poppins Ride (EPCOT) – Disney has also postponed the proposed ride.
Disneyland:
- Avengers Campus- Nearing completion but with the theme parks still closed no word on opening date.

Projects that Remain Uncertain
Walt Disney World:
- Splash Mountain (Magic Kingdom) – This ride will be rethemed for Princess and the Frog but remains in early stages of development.
- Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind (EPCOT) – Disney hasn’t said much about what the state of this attraction is.
- Moana-themed Attraction (EPCOT)- Little has been said about this new attraction but it still remains on list of projects at the EPCOT Experience exhibit.
- HarmoniUS (EPCOT)- This new nighttime spectacular was slated to open in October. Construction continues but no updated timeline given.
What We Know About the Galactic Starcruiser
One of the things Star Wars fans want to know is timings for the Galactic Starcruiser, the fully immersive Star Wars resort experience. The project as originally intended to open in 2021. However, Disney has remain pretty tight-lipped about the project, implications for social distancing etc. As CinemaBlend points out, “Considering how communal the experience seems to be when it’s been described, it feels like a lot of what was planned for the Galactic Starcruiser might not work unless strangers are allowed to be close together. Could we see changes in what is planned, which could potentially delay construction?” And they’re right, the immersive nature of the immersive hotel experience is better suited to time when there’s a vaccine for COVID-19.

The Future Of Disneyland And Walt Disney World
As CinemaBlend points out out, it kinda goes without saying that theme parks are in for a difficult time over the next few year. Though the crisis itself may end when a vaccine is released, the companies and travellers will be living with the financial repercussions for years. With that in mind Disney fans may go longer than expected without updates to attractions or the reopening of new attractions.
