Broadway Theaters Will Remain Closed Through 2020
It’s a sad week for Broadway fans as it was officially announced that Broadway shows WILL NOT open in September as originally hoped. According to a recent piece in Playbill, The Broadway League has announced that ALL productions will remain closed until at least January 3, 2021.
Audiences can expect shows to start returning next year on a rolling basis rather than on a specific date. Details regarding scheduling and ticketing will be announced in the coming weeks.
The closures have already had a HUGE impact on Disney On Broadway when the news came out earlier this Spring that Frozen was the first casualty of a closed Broadway and would not be reopening. Disney still has two musicals slated to return The Lion King and Aladdin. Both have had long, successful runs and continue to be a tourist draw. We hope they withstand the closure and will be watching closely for updates.
According to Playbill, many major productions slated to open this year have pushed back their premiere dates into next year already. One such example is The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster which will now be opening in May 2021.
Broadway productions were shut down back in March after Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a restriction on mass gatherings. The shutdowns were originally slated for a month before being pushed back to June 7th and then to September.
President of the Broadway Theater League, Charlotte St. Martin said of the extended closure, “We are determined to bring back the people who rely on this industry for their livelihood, and to welcome back all those who love this vital part of New York City, as soon as it is safe to do so.” She added, “As so many of us in the Broadway community have been saying during this time: We’ll be back, and we have so many more stories to tell.”
This is, of course, a story that we’ll be following closely here at MickeyBlog. Readers are encouraged to keep checking in with us for further news and updates.
