The 2021 Oscars are Delayed
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that the 2021 Oscars would now be delayed until April 25th. The latest date since the Oscars started being televised in 1953. The original date of the Academy’s Awards was February 28th, 2021, but with concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak and no vaccine in place the decision was made to delay the awards.
The Oscars
In 1966, the Oscars aired on April 18th. This was the same year “The Sound of Music” won best picture and the first time the ceremony was broadcast in color. These new dates also extend the timetable for qualification for the awards. Films with a release date of January 1st, 2020 and February 28th, 2021 will qualify for the April awards.
“We find ourselves in uncharted territory this year and will continue to work with our partners at the Academy to ensure next year’s show is a safe and celebratory event that also captures the excitement of the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said in unveiling today’s news. With the delay of the Oscar ceremony also comes a delay in the opening of The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Announced by Tom Hanks, the Museum was originally supposed to open on December 14th, 2020. Construction has continued after a brief closure for the COVID outbreak, but the new opening date isn’t until April 30th. Right after the Oscars air.
Hopefully, public health issues will begin to get better with new treatments and potential vaccines so this timeline, along with many others, can happen.
