In the lead in to the COVID-19 outbreak, we here at MickeyBlog spent a lot of time covering the TSA workers in Orlando that were coming down with the virus in significant numbers.
It seems since we covered this story in March, the TSA has been coming up with strategies to protect workers and passengers travelling to airports across the country. In a press release that came out yesterday, TSA announced that they will be implementing new COVID-19 safety measures at airports across the country. As Disney travellers know this will include airports near Walt Disney World (Orlando) and Disneyland (the greater Los Angeles area.)

Chief among these NEW safety measures is the requirement that all TSA employees wear facial protection at the airports, this will include at screening checkpoints. According to the official press release, the implementation of the face mask policy is expected to take place over the upcoming days. Wearing protective eyewear will remain voluntary by personnel who are working in a screening position.
TSA Administrator David Pekoske had this to say about the updated policy, “TSA is making this change to protect our employees and travellers as social distancing cannot always be maintained in the screening process.”
So what does this mean for passengers?
According to the same press release, passengers are encouraged to wear facial protection. That being said, individuals may be required to momentarily lower their facial covering for verification or if an alarm goes off during the screening. TSA also advised that they are looking at other changes to the screening system to further minimize the risk and to limit physical interactions at the TSA checkpoint.
TSA advised that they shape their policy based on guidance issues from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
As of going to print, 14 TSA workers stationed at Orlando International Airports have tested positive for the virus. This is a story that we’ll continue to follow closely here at MickeyBlog so keep checking in for the latest news and updates!
