The Writers of Rogue One Reveal Alternate Title, That Cassian Was a Double Agent and More!
According to a recent post with Yahoo Movies UK, the writers of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had a few interesting revelations about the film! This includes a different title for the movie and the fact that (gasp) Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) was originally working for the Empire.
These juicy “Rogue One” tidbits came after two of the writers, Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, had a screening party of the film yesterday with IGN.
For those that haven’t seen the film (and if you haven’t you definitely should) it takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and tells the story of a rebel group whose mission was to steal the plans to the Death Star to understand its weaknesses.
Interestingly enough Whitta said that the title of the film was a surprise to him just like the rest of the world. He said, “Bob Iger announced it at a shareholders conference.” He continues, “I went ‘oh, that’s my title’. That’s how I found out. “
Whitta said that they were looking for a title that represented that the project was sort of set apart from the ‘unwritten rules’ of the other Star Wars films. Other titles under consideration were Dark Times, Rebellion and even Shadows of the Death Star according to both writers.
Several drafts of the film were worked on before Tony Gilroy took over writing duties with pretty massive rewrites. Initially the writers had imagined Cassian Andor as a Rebel fighter working as “double agent” for Krennic.
Weitz explained Cassians initial role a bit more, “I think this was a rationale that I added in, was that he had lost people who had been killed by [Forest Whitaker’s character] Saw Gererra. And all he wanted from the Empire was the go-ahead and the ability to kill Saw Gererra, rather than Galen Erso.”
So how did the original writers feel about how Cassian’s character evolved through the re-writes? Whitta said that the version of Andor in the movie ended up being “more nuanced and interesting” than their original take on the character.
Rogue One ended up being quite a successful endeavour in the Star Wars franchise grossing $1.06 billion at the global box office. Fans and critics also felt warmly about the film and it currently has an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As we’ve mentioned previously here at MickeyBlog, a spinoff Cassian Andor series is currently in the works for the Disney+ streaming network. Weitz and Whitta are not involved but Gilroy will be back to write and direct the project.
