James Gunn Admits He Didn’t Know Infinity Stones Were Going to Be Such a Big Deal
During social distancing, some of our favorite directors and celebrities are taking to social media for live streaming events! Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn did just that this week. And funnily enough, during his Q&A with fans revealed that he had no idea when directing the 2014 film that Infinity Stones would become such a big deal.
As you know, the central conflict in Guardians centers around a mysterious orb snapped up by Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) which we later find out is an Infinity Stone. The film was the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to explain the importance of the stones. As ScreenRant suggests it was Gunn’s explanation of the Infinity Stones and the introduction of Thanos that helped add much-needed context to the central arc of the MCU films going forward.
As you’ll recall during the first Guardians film, Thanos wanted all of the Infinity Stones so that he could control the universe before it eventually fell into the hands of Ronan the Accuser.
When Gunn was asked about the Infinity Stones during the Q&A he provided some pretty interesting insights. As you can see from the tweets below he was asked to include the Infinity Stones and a Thanos cameo but was yet unsure of the overall significance of the orders handed down from Marvel.
The ONLY thing Marvel asked me to include was a Thanos cameo and said maybe I could create an origin for the Infinity Stones. Other than that they were up for whatever and weren’t set on any one way to handle the characters. #QuarantineWatchParty #GotG https://t.co/zZtcXF2ftw

We didn’t know at that time it was going to be as big a deal as it turned out to be. #QuarantineWatchParty #gotg https://t.co/bsouMRMgAx

As we previously reported here at MickeyBlog, a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has been given the greenlight. Gunn and Co. have remained pretty tight-lipped about the project but we do know that it will mean a larger role for Rocket the Raccoon with the film delving a bit deeper into his backstory.
Like most films, progress and production are expected to be limited due to the COVID-19 closures. However, we’ll be watching for updated details and promise to keep you posted so keep following along!
