The fate of the Spider-Man franchise was unstable earlier in 2019, when it appeared that Sony’s deal with Disney was in jeopardy. The character has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years now, and yet it began to look like the Spider-Man deal would completely unravel. Last fall, it became clear that Spider-Man would be staying in the MCU. Now, the head of Sony has revealed that he is pleased with this outcome.

The Spider-Man Deal
The negotiations for Spider-Man to stay under the Disney umbrella took a public turn last year. Tom Holland, the star of both Spider-Man films in the MCU, made a plea to Bob Iger to reach an agreement with Sony. Iger revealed in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel that this motivated him to work out the deal for the fans (and stars) of the franchise. Negotiations were finalized last fall, and the release date for the third Spider-Man film was announced.

Sony’s Perspective
Bob Iger’s feelings about Spider-Man have been very clear, but Sony Chairman Tom Rothman feels the same. As reported by Sandy Schaefer in a ScreenRant article, Rothman described the Spider-Man deal as a “win-win-win.” He stated that it is not only a win for both Sony and Disney, but for the fans as well. ScreenRant goes on to point out that while many consider Sony the winners of this deal, Disney will still benefit from the fan support that will remain with the MCU.

Spider-Man’s Role at Disney
The Spider-Man character has become much more present in the Disney company over the last few years. In the ‘Avengers Campus’ area opening in Disneyland, Disney guests will have the opportunity to ride an exciting new Spider-Man attraction. Guests also now have the chance for a Spider-Man meet and greet at California Adventure. It is clear that this relationship is important to both Sony and Disney. We are excited to see how this develops in the future, and what it means for Disney fans.
