‘The Mandalorian’ Beats out ‘Stranger Things’ as the Top Streaming TV Show in the US
The Disney+ streaming service has only been up and running for two weeks but it is already smashing records! According to a recent piece in Business Insider, the Star Wars-based series The Mandalorian has gained a massive following (based in part on Baby Yoda) and has now dethroned Stranger Things as the streaming champion!
Netflix’s Stranger Things was a pop culture phenomenon and enjoyed 21 straight weeks at the top of the most in-demand original streaming shows in the US. However, The Mandalorian has already surpassed it! These statistics are based on figures from Parrot Analytics which measures “demand expressions” based on the desire, engagement and viewership of TV programs!
According to this method, The Mandalorian had over 100 million demand expressions for the week of November 17 – November 23rd. In comparison, Stranger Things had 81 million!
With these figures in mind, The Mandalorian is already being seen as the most in-demand new original streaming series of the year only weeks after it’s release! It also surpassed The Umbrella Academy and When They See Us on Netflix.
“While demand is a metric that should not be confused with subscriber numbers, this is a strong indication that the ‘Star Wars’ series is driving a lot of sign-ups to the recently-debuted Disney Plus service,” a Parrot Analytics representative said.
“The Mandalorian” isn’t just a hit with audiences, it also has a 90% Rotten Tomatoes critic score after just three episodes. Business Insider said in its review of the first episode that the series “proves ‘Star Wars’ can make the leap from movies to prestige TV.”
