‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Makes History With Second Unit Director
Yesterday was a MASSIVE day for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker news! Not only were fans treated to a brand-new trailer during Monday Night Football but tickets for the films screenings starting on December 19 were officially opened for pre-sale. However, there’s another Star Wars story that has been quietly under the radar that we think also deserves a TON of attention.
Though much has been made of the return of J.J. Abrams to the director’s chair for the final instalment of the Saga, the Second Unit director Victoria Mahoney is making history as not only the first black woman to step behind the camera for Star Wars but the first woman ever!
The second unit directors lead a crew to capture additional footage for the film. This often includes establishing shots as well as stunts! This is groundbreaking in that Mahoney’s hire has already paved the way for female directors in the franchise. Bryce Dallas Howard has already been announced as one of the directors for The Mandalorian which is heading to Disney+ along with Deborah Chow who was slated to direct the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi live-action series also for Disney +. Hopefully, this also means that Mahoney may take the reigns of her own Star Wars film one day!
An actress in the 90s, Mahoney directed her first feature film, Yelling to the Sky (starring Zoë Kravitz)back in 2011. She also has an eclectic array of television director credits under her belt including Grey’s Anatomy, Power, Seven Seconds, Survivor’s Remorse, American Crime, and more.
Check out one of her tweets during the filming for Star Wars:
I can pin the definitive moment, I walked onto set, ready for whatever challenge the day would bring, when I felt the footing, heart, labor, loyalty, respect, skill, talent, & joy of this entire crew in rhythmic step–alongside me.
Thanku #IX : 2U, for today&everyday! #CrewStrong pic.twitter.com/kS4xVTpZPI— Vic Mahoney (@VictoriaMahoney) December 14, 2018
