Billy Porter, Idina Menzel and Camila Carbello All Slated For Sony’s Live-Action Cinderella
We’ve got some exciting news for fans of the beloved Fairy Tale Cinderella. Sony is currently working on casting for a live-action musical update of the much-loved rags to riches tale and the casting has been nothing short of stunning. The new take on the storybook classic will be directed by Pitch Perfect writer and Blockers director Kay Cannon. The idea was the brainchild of late-night host James Cordon who will be producing the film with Leo Perlman
The Sony production has star quality written all over it. Here are some key roles we know of so far!
Billy Porter as the Fairy Godmother
Billy Porter is ready to grant some wishes. Porter, who recently earned an Emmy for outstanding lead actor for his role on the FX series Pose, is in talks to join Sony’s Cinderella. Sources say that Porter will be playing the movie musical’s resident fairy godmother.
Camila Cabello as Cinderella
The title role is going to none other than Camila Cabello. The Cuban-American singer-songwriter is fresh off the release of her 2018 debut album Camila. Her Cuban-inspired hit “Havana” — the leading track from the album — was recently named the bestselling single of 2018 by the IFPI. The 22-year-old will also be involved in the film’s music creation.
Idina Menzel – Evil Stepmother
Fairy tales are nothing new to Idina! She won a Tony-award for her role in the Broadway Musical Wicked. Won over fans of all ages for lending her voice to the role of Elsa in Frozen and was even in the Disney film Enchanted! That’s why even if the Sony film isn’t part of the Disney canon, we consider it one for the mere fact that Idina has signed on to play the role of the Evil Stepmother Evelyn.
While we don’t know much about the storyline for the project, with talent like this how could you go wrong? But seriously, murmurings we are hearing suggest that it will be a modern reimagining of the fairy tale. It will follow an orphaned girl with an evil stepmother and will have a hefty dose of music thrown in!
