Disney Reportedly Working on Live-Action ‘Pocahontas’ and Scouting for Native American Actress
Disney’s live-action trend shows no signs of slowing. This week we here at MickeyBlog shared a first look at the trailer for “Mulan” and also some initial reports that a live-action “Hercules” is in the mix. Well today, if reports are to be believed, we share with you the news that a live-action version of “Pocahontas” is supposedly in the mix.
According to a piece in We Got This Covered, Disney has now set its sights on an update of the 1995 animated classic and is scouting for a Native American actress to star in the title role. Though little has been revealed regarding the project, sources suggest that the film may veer slightly from the musical version that won an Academy Award back in 1995 and instead follow ‘Mulan’ in being a less musical and more traditional retelling.
The original version of Pocahontas was criticized for its loose interpretation of the original story. It will be interesting to see if Disney remains true to their original storyline or goes back to the source material in the way that ‘Mulan’ has.
What we know so far is that the film is in the very early stages of development. If it comes to fruition, in the manner suggested above it would be awesome to see the Native American community involved in the project!
This is a story that we here at MickeyBlog will be watching closely. Readers are encouraged to keep following along for this and other Disney movie news!
