Jared Leto Slated For New TRON Film
It looks like Disney’s latest TRON film is gaining some traction. According to a piece in Deadline today both a director and leading after have been lined up for the productions.
According to reports, Garth Davis has been lined up to direct the film. He is best known for art-house films including 2018’s Mary Magdalene as well as his 2016 acclaimed drama Lion which earned him 6 Oscar nominations including Best Picture. TRON would be a departure for Davis as he typically known for low budget films but according to Deadline its a project that he’s been actively pursuing.
Reports also suggest that Jared Leto has been tapped for the lead role in the film and that Leto along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook will be producers on the film. Jesse Wigutow has written the most recent draft of the script.
As fans know, the original 1982 version of the film stars Jeff Bridges and was set inside a computer program known as the Grid. A hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games.
The film wasn’t a huge success upon its 1982 release but has gained a cult following since. This prompted Disney to release TRON: Legacy back in 2010 with Bridges reprising his role as Garret Hedlund. Olivia Wilde also joined the franchise.
Though plans for another TRON film have stalled out over the years and with Leto attached to the project since 2017 with Davis now at the helm it looks to finally be gaining traction.
It should be noted that as of going to print, the green light has still not been given for the project. However, with Disney’s new TRON coaster current under construction at Magic Kingdom, there’s no better time to revive the franchise and audience interest.
