The newest Disney Princess is not a lovely lady searching for her prince charming. Instead, she is a rescue dog turned therapy dog who will be featured on the Disney+ series “It’s a Dog’s Life”.
The series features two working dogs and one “Hometown Hero” pup in each episode. In this week’s episode Abigail is the “Hometown Hero”.
“She is going to be the newest Disney Princess,” Megan Steinke, Abigail’s adopted dog-mom, told NBC affiliate WPTV. (People.com)
In 2016, Abigail was rescued by the Florida nonprofit Love is Fur Ever Dog Rescue. They suspected Abigail was a bait dog in a dog fighting ring because of some injuries she had when she was rescued. An ear and part of the side of her head were heavily injured. The organization’s vet said it was the worst case he had ever seen.
“We’re looking at a really long, long recovery for her,” Victoria Frazier, the Founder of Love is Fur Ever, told the outlet at the time. (People.com)
“Since being rescued, Abigail has become a therapy dog with her sister Tala, helping veterans, first responders, children, and the elderly. Together, they visit assisted living homes for residents with memory issues, cancer centers, schools, Red Cross shelters, police departments, fire departments, and more.”
Abigail’s owner said when Disney reached out to feature Abigail they were happily surprised, but happy she was going to get some recognition for all of her hard work.
The episode of “It’s A Dog’s Life” featuring Princess Abigail will air on Disney+ on May 29th.
