No More Screaming On Roller Coasters!? This Could Be A New Restriction at Tokyo Disney
There’s been much speculation as to what theme parks might look like in a post COVID-19 world. We’ve already seen some of the changes implemented at Shanghai Disney and Disney Springs including mandatory temperature checks, face mask requirements and social distancing in queues. However, here’s a report out of Tokyo that surprised us this morning.
As of going to print, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea remain closed. However, there have been murmurings that the parks will be looking to reopen soon. With that in mind, the East Japan and West Japan Theme Park Associations have drafted up a document titled “Guidelines to Prevent the Spread of Infection of the Novel Coronavirus.” This was written with the consent of Oriental Land Japan and USJ which are the companies that manage Tokyo Disneyland/DisneySea and Universal Studios.
The document which is now out in the public domain lays out a number of suggested policy changes. Though many are similar to the policies that we’ve seen be implemented at Shanghai and Disney Springs like capping admission, the policy also suggests a cashless system, as well as strategies that could be implemented on the actual attractions themselves and this, is where things get interesting!
According to a report on SoraNews24, some of the suggestions for rides seem pretty straightforward like keeping windows and doors open for better ventilation but then there’s this:
“Roller coasters and other conveyance-style attractions
Have guests wear masks, and urge them to refrain from shouting/screaming.”
This is a very interesting suggestion given that the rush of adrenaline followed by a scream or two is one of the things people love most about coaster riding. As Sora News says, shouting and screaming are the exact responses they’re designed to produce.
The reason for this request according to the policies put forth by the association is that they would rather ”not have riders’ breath, saliva, and other mouth sourced particles flying around! ”
But coasters aren’t the only attractions where these guidelines are being recommended. The same suggestions are being made for everything from indoor attractions to character meet and greets. At the moment, it should be noted that these are just guidelines. Still, it’s interesting to think of a silent trip on Space Mountain or a quiet final drop in Splash Mountain, isn’t it!?
