Marvel Gets Its First Transgender Character
Over the years, Marvel has tried through their comics and films to support diversity. Though there have been characters in the past that have appeared on the LGBT spectrum, this week the company has officially revealed its first transgender superhero! The Mighty Rebekah, is inspired by a 12-year old transgender girl (of the same name) and is part of Marvel’s Hero Project a new series on Disney Plus.
As part of the show, those featured get their own comic book! As a matter of fact, the first issue of the Mighty Rebekah can be found here for FREE.
According to a recent piece in the Advocate, Rebekah and her family have been active in trans and LGBT rights in New Jersey. Rebekah has also appeared before New Jersey lawmakers to push for Assembly Bill 1335 which mandates that schools include LGBT history as part of the curriculum. The bill passed and will be introduced to the state next year.
In a video interview with Rebekah (click to enlarge), available above, she and her mother talk about their advocacy and success in widening understanding of transgender children in the school system. Rebekah had this to say about getting selected to be a part of Marvel’s Hero Project.
In addition, the series on Disney+ offers a more in-depth look at Rebekah’s transition including her religious faith and Marvel’s commitment to increase LGBT visibility.
