Dafne Keen Discusses Her ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Return
With just one week to go until Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters, Marvel Studios has released the final trailer for the upcoming film.
The biggest revelation in the new clip is that Wolverine will reunite with Dafne Keen’s Laura (a.k.a. X-23) in the Void.

For months, Keen has told anyone who would listen that she will not be reprising her iconic role from Logan in the upcoming Deadpool installment.
“It’s sad…I love Hugh Jackman…Ryan Reynolds is a legend … It would’ve been amazing to be a part of it,” she told On Demand Entertainment.

As it turns out, Keen was lying.
Keen Thought Her Time As X-23 Was Over
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Keen discussed having to keep her Deadpool & Wolverine roles a secret.
“I had a great time keeping it secret. I had to do a bunch of press for a job that I just finished,” Keen said (referring to her role in The Acolyte). “And I got asked in every interview, and I just got to lie, which was really funny.”

Shortly after the release of Logan, Keen believed that an X-23 spinoff could be on the horizon.
“It was very much a reality that then kind of fell through,” she recalled. “There were talks of a script being made. I’d heard it was an X-23 [movie]. I dunno how much of what I’m saying is true because I was 11, but this is what I’d heard through the grapevine.”
Things changed, however, when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox.

“I was like, ‘Oh well, I guess that’s it. That’s life, and I’ll have to move on’ — even though this is one of the greatest characters I’ll ever get to play, and annoyingly, I got to play her at 11! I peaked at 11.”
Getting the Call
While Keen believed her time as X-23 had come to an end, the Deadpool & Wolverine team had other ideas.
“I immediately screamed,” Keen says of the moment that her agent told her she would be reprising her role. “I dropped my phone in the bath. And I had to put it in rice; it was a whole thing.”

Playing Laura again after eight years was admittedly nerve-wracking for Keen.
“I was a bit freaked out,” she says of getting to set. “I was like, ‘I will have forgotten how to play her. She’s not in me anymore.'”
Luckily, once she was on set and filming started, Keen fell back into character.

“We went straight into this pretty intense scene. I know I was freaking out,” she added. “As soon as they said, ‘Rolling!’ I really felt like we were back doing Logan. It was like eight years hadn’t passed.”
A Grown Up Laura
In the eight years between Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine, Laura has grown up. According to Keen, a now wiser X-23 can better understand Logan.
“It was wonderful to get to come back to that and explore that as a grownup,” she explains, “now understanding more parental rage so much more and bringing that to the table for her. I found that Laura in Logan stumbled into having a dad and then having lost her dad. We find her again really knowing how to appreciate — and with this kind of wiseness to her — how much her father means to her.”

Despite her character growth over the years, Laura is still a wild, almost feral character.
“That’s how I found her again,” Keen says. “There wasn’t a lot of looking [for her]. She was just kind of in me. The first thing I did for Deadpool was stunt training before I shot anything. I put on the costume and was like, ‘Oh! She’s back.'”
