Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Scrapped Star Wars Film Would Have Focused on the “Rise and Fall” of Jabba the Hutt
Screenwriter David S. Goyer blew fans’ minds last month when he revealed that at one time Guillermo del Toro was working on a Star Wars project.
According to Goyer, “around four years ago” he “wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct”.

Del Toro then confirmed Goyer’s story, posting on X, “True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters “J” and “BB” is that three letters?”

Fans were quick to speculate on what Del Toro’s cryptic message was referring to. While “BB” seemed to be a reference to BB-8, “J” was more ambiguous. As we guessed, however, “J” was a reference to long-time Star Wars antagonist Jaba the Hutt.
The Rise and Fall of Jaba the Hutt
In an interview with Collider, Del Toro revealed that his Star Wars film would have tackled the “rise and fall of Jaba the Hut”.
“We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy. We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away. Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. And we learned.’”
Who is Jabba the Hutt?
For those who don’t know, Jabba the Hutt was a crime lord on Tatooine, who originally appeared in Return of the Jedi.
In the film, Jabba puts a bounty on Han Solo’s head. The smuggler is then captured by Boba Fett, frozen in carbonite, and displayed as a trophy in Jabba’s palace.
Eventually, Hutt also captures Leia Organa, enslaving the princess after she attempts to save Han.
After Luke Skywalker appeared on Tatooine to rescue his friends, Princess Leia got her revenge, strangling the Hutt with her chains.
A Victim of ‘Solo’s’ Box Office Failure?
Guillermo Del Toro’s planned entry into the Star Wars universe came at a time when Lucasfilm was planning on releasing one-off “Anthology” films that would explore various corners of the galaxy.
Following Solo’s failure at the box office, however, plans for the Star Wars Anthology Series were scrapped, likely spelling the end for Del Toro’s Jabba the Hutt film.
No Hard Feelings
Despite never formally joining the galaxy far, far, away, Del Toro has no hard feelings.
“You can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there’s something to be learned from it. So, you know, I trust the universe, I do. When something doesn’t happen, I go, “Why?” I try to have a dialogue with myself. “Why didn’t it happen?” And the more you swim upstream with the universe, the less you’re gonna realize where you’re going.”
While Del Toro remains philosophical about the project, as a Star Wars fan, I would have loved to see the famed director’s vision for a Jabba movie.
Perhaps one day, Del Toro will try again.
