Disney Announces A New ‘Little Mermaid’ Show — ‘Disney Junior’s Ariel’
In one of the biggest announcements at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, Disney Branded Television announced the creation of a new animated series for preschoolers.
Titled Disney’s Junior’s Ariel, the new show was inspired by the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
The announcement was made today by Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.
For more than 30 years, the story of The Little Mermaid has been beloved by audiences all over the world. It brings me so much joy to be able to introduce our new Disney Junior version of Ariel to preschoolers everywhere,” said Davis.
Exploring Under The Sea
The new series will follow the adventures of a young Ariel and include fan-favorite characters such as King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian, and Flounder. Additionally, the show is expected to introduce new characters.
Disney Junior’s Ariel will be set in the Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica. There, Ariel is driven by an unending curiosity about the world around her. The mermaid is always on the hunt for land treasures, such as a rubber duck or floppy hat, which she keeps safe in her crystal cavern. The treasures also help Ariel solve problems.
“As we were developing Disney Junior’s Ariel, we knew that we wanted to create an atmosphere that was vibrant and magical and showcased our young Ariel’s imagination, which, like our preschool audience watching at home, is as big as the sea,” added Alyssa Sapire, senior vice president of development, series, and strategy for Disney Junior.
A Veteran Crew
Disney Junior’s Ariel is executive produced by Lynne Southerland (“Mulan II,” “Happily Ever After”). Norma P. Sepulveda (“Elena of Avalor”) and Keith Wagner (“TrollsTopia”) serve as story editors. Ezra Edmond (“Disney+ Draw Me a Story”) is a producer and Kuni Tomita Bowen (“Dora the Explorer”) is supervising director. Finally, Chrystin Garland (“Solar Opposites”) is on board as art director.
Additionally, the series is produced by Wild Canary (“Miles from Tomorrowland”) in association with Disney Jr.
