The Broadway League
In case you’re unaware, “The Broadway League is the national trade association for the Broadway industry” according to Playbill. There are 700 members (or more) including theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers. This covers almost 200 markets in North America and across the world.
The Broadway League announced on May 20, 2022, that all 41 Broadway theatres located in New York City, New York must extend the mask requirement. Charlotte St. Martin, the president of The Broadway League, made the announcement.
Mask Requirement Extension
Charlotte St. Martin of The Broadway League said, “We’re thrilled that nearly a quarter of a million people are attending Broadway shows weekly in this exciting spring season. As always, the safety and security of our cast, crew, and audience have been our top priority.”
St. Martin continued by stating, “By maintaining our audience masking requirement through at least the month of June, we intend to continue that track record of safety for all, despite the Omicron subvariants.”
Know Expectations
Of course, mask mandates have been a huge topic of debate amongst Americans for over two years now. Both sides have understanding arguments.
As far as The Broadway League is concerned, administrators plan to announce mask requirements for July 2022 in June of this year. However, The League made previous lifts regarding requirements due to the pandemic.
For example, The Broadway League announced that many of the Broadway houses will not check the vaccination status of their guests. However, you should visit your Broadway show’s website or point of purchase for proof of vaccination requirements.
Still Transitioning
Hence, each show may have varying requirements, so be sure to know before you attend the show! Always know the expectations during this transitional time, including mask requirements.
