Disney’s Plans For a Line of “Let It Go” Themed Merchandise Thwarted By Copyright Issues
The popularity of Disney’s iconic film Frozen is still going strong. Therefore, it’s not surprising that Disney had plans to develop a new merchandise line celebrating Elsa’s signature catchphrase “Let It Go.” However, Disney execs were surprised to find out they were blocked from creating such a line due to the fact that the rights were too similar to a “Let It Go” application filed by a woman back in 2017.
According to a recent piece in The Blast, Leigh Burton from Canada wanted to use “Let It Go” for her own line of clothing including sweatshirts and t-shirts. Because Burton filed her application first and because both lines would consist of clothing, Disney had their application for these new Frozen-themed items suspended.
So what’s next for Disney? They are now taking steps to make sure that the Frozen brand is protected. With this in mind, they’ve filed an opposition against Burton. Disney in their legal documents argues that they’ve been actively using the “Let It Go” catchphrase since Frozen premiered back in 2013.
No word yet on whether Disney’s attempts to green light their “Let It Go” merchandising line and thwart Burton’s attempt have been successful. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest Disney news and updates!
