Neal Kirby, Son of Captain America Creator, Speaks
January 6th, 2021 is a day that will stay in the memory of most every American. We all watched as the state Capitol building was overrun by insurrectionists.
Politicians hid for fear of their lives, policeman defending them where harmed, individuals involved where fatally wounded. It was a sad and dark day for the American people.
A statement released today, reported by Jake Tapper shows Neal Kirby, son of famed Comic Book creator Jack Kirby, comment on insurrectionists who where seen wearing the emblem of his father, and co creator Joe Simons, greatest creation; Captain America.
Kirby penned an incredibly moving piece that gives words to the shame of associating the horrific acts of that day, to the hero who has always fought for truth, justice, and the true American way.
“Captain America has served as a symbol and protector of our democracy for the past 79 years” Kirby writes. “He was created by two Jewish guys from New York who hated Nazis and hated bullies.”
He explores the horror of seeing the emblem in video coverage of the event. He notes the stories and memories he has of the various revolutions he has witnessed in his lifetime. He also notes how January 6ths events stand above the rest as his most haunting memory.
More than that, he remembers his father. He remembers the stories. He remembers the values that where tied into the intention of creating a character like Captain America.
He remembers what Steve Rogers was always meant to represent. He contrasts his fathers creation, with the man behind this violent event.
He doesn’t mince words. Captain America was always intended to represent the best of what the American way could be; what it should be. The current president standing in direct opposition to that. Representing the greed, selfishness, and cowardice that stands against what Cap has stood for.
He ends his statement with perhaps the most poignant words. “My father, Jack Kirby, and Joe Simon, the creators of Captain America, and WWII veterans, would be absolutely sickened by these images. These images are an insult to both their memories”
