Jessica Alba Reflects on Her Time in the Fantastic Four
As Marvel Studios prepares to begin production on their own adaptation of the Fantastic Four, increased attention is being focused on the Tim Story movies that brought the characters to the big screen nearly twenty years ago.
Despite being largely panned by critics, Story’s Fantastic Four was an undeniable box office hit. In the film, the First Family of Marvel was portrayed by Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards), Chris Evans (Johnny Storm), Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm), and Jessica Alba (Sue Storm).
Jessica Alba Has “Nothing But Fond Memories”
19 years after delivering the first mainstream live-action portrayal of Sue Storm (aka The Invisible Woman), Alba sat down with ComicBook to discuss her time in the Fantastic Four franchise.
“It’s nothing but fond memories,” said Alba. “I loved it so much playing that character. I feel like my whole life started in a lot of ways at that moment. I met my life partner, we’re still together, we have three kids. Tim Story, who directed, is still one of my best friends. We have New Year’s Eve together,” she explained.
“It was great and she was such a cool, inspiring character and ahead of her time, I would say, in the genre. And still, you still haven’t seen someone who is so nurturing and feminine, but then also a fearsome badass. I haven’t seen that combination again. And so I think she still fills this beautiful kind of space or void in the Marvel universe.”
While the box office success of Story’s original Fantastic Four movie was enough to spur a sequel, 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, a third film in the franchise never materialized.
Eventually, the dawn of Iron Man and the MCU would largely overshadow Alba’s Fantastic Four films.
What’s Next For Sue Storm?
Following Alba’s run as Sue Storm, Kate Mara assumed the role of the Invisible Women in 2015’s Fantastic Four. Next up, it will be Vanessa Kirby, who will portray the iconic Marvel heroine.
Still, for a generation of Marvel fans who can remember a time before the MCU, Alba is synonymous with the First Lady of Marvel. It is good to hear that the actress, like fans themselves, has fond memories of the original live-action Fantastic Four.
