Disney World Files Permit For Major Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment
With work on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure now wrapped up at the Magic Kingdom, it appears as if Disney is getting ready for its next major Frontierland project.
Today, the company filed a permit for what looks like a major refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The new document describes the work as “General Construction” and is set to expire on Augst 8, 2025.

Interstingly, the permit has been assigned to Coastal Steel Inc., which has long been Disney’s contractor of choice when it comes to rollercoasters. Among the numerous Disney World projects that Coastal Steel has worked on are: Expedition Everest, Disney’s Blizzard Beach, and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. The contractor is also set to construct the new version of Test Track.
What Will the Refurb Entail?
While we don’t know exactly what the refurbishment will entail, it looks to be significant.
It is possible that the Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be getting the long-awaited dynamite effect used in other versions of the attraction.
The explosion effect debuted at Disneyland in 2014. Currently, the Magic Kingdom has the only version of the attraction without the effect.
Although we do not have a timeline for when the refurbishment will start, the permit’s filing would seem to indicate that it will begin relatively soon. Disney will likely want to get Tiana’s Bayou Adventure officially open and running consistently before closing Frontierland’s other E-Ticket attraction.
