Reedy Creek Updates Their Comprehensive Plan
The Reedy Creek Improvement District made adjustments to its 2032 comprehensive plan, which may have consequences for the future of Walt Disney World.
The meeting took place during an uncertain time for the Improvement District, as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a law to dissolve the special district.
For those who don’t know, the Reedy Creek Improvement District is a 39-square-mile governing and special taxing district created for Walt Disney World in 1968. The district gives Disney the same authority and responsibilities as a county government.
Today’s meeting by the district looked to update last year’s comprehensive plan. The plan covered the next ten years of development in the district. The new comprehensive plan allows for the following:
– A major theme park and two minor theme parks.
-14,000 guest rooms mixed-use/hotel/resort/commercial entertainment
– 1,515 hotel/resort guest rooms
– 150,00 square feet of office space
– 1 million square feet of retail/reference space.
In order to complete these additions, Reedy Creek estimates approximately 850 acres would be needed.
An Uncertain Future
Just because an item appears in the comprehensive plan, does not mean that it will come to fruition.
In fact, the new plan adds that while a new major theme park is added, “there are no plans under review”.
Whether or not Disney decides to build on the land, the fact remains that space is available. By including plots of “suitable” land in Reedy Creek comprehensive plan, they keep their options open.
With the future of the Reedy Creek Improvement District murky, what happens next is anybody’s guess.
