Jeremy Renner Discusses the Possibility of an Original Avengers Reunion
After a particularly difficult 2023, rumors have swirled that Marvel Studios could look for a way to reunite the original Avengers.
It is no secret that the MCU has found uneven footing following Avengers: Endgame and the exit of franchise stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson.

Last November, Variety reported that Marvel was considering assembling the original Avengers team as a way to fend off the onset of “superhero fatigue,” with even deceased characters like Johansson’s Black Widow and Stark’s Iron Man being brought into the fold.
While the Variety report noted that Marvel had “committed” to the proposal, rumors have continued to swirl ever since.

In fact, in recent months, Robert Downey Jr. has expressed his willingness to return to the MCU, calling the role of Tony Stark “part of my DNA.”
Jeremy Renner Isn’t Sure the Original Avengers Should Be Brought Back
During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jeremy Renner, who portrays the original Avenger Hawkeye in the MCU, was asked about reuniting with his old teammates.

“Maybe if enough time goes by, right? I think it kind of has at this point, but also what is the point of the narrative, the story? These are beloved characters. We did spend 23 films together essentially as a collective,” Renner said. “To start it up, what is the reason? What is the story? Do you have to do more after that? How do you ever resolve this?”
Marvel Would Be Making a Mistake
Renner is, of course, right. Should Marvel bring back the original Avengers through some sort of multiversal madness, it would undermine the emotional impact of the stories they have already told.
Additionally, the stakes in any future Marvel films would be compromised, as any death would never feel impermanent.

During his interview with Horowitz, Renner explained the problem with reviving the fallen Avengers.
“When is it ever gonna feel like, ‘Everyone gets their little bow, it feels great, nobody died!’ What happens here? There are no consequences, because it’s like, in the Multiverse here, your death doesn’t mean anything. I’ve got feelings about it. I think everybody does. I think the guys that died have feelings about it.”

Thankfully, Marvel head Kevin Feige has previously stated that the MCU team has no plan to undo the Avenger’s deaths. Speaking of Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, Feige said:
We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

Will Renner Return?
As for Renner, the actor says he is “always down” to return to the MCU.

“I think it’d be great. It’d be awesome. I’d love to be with everyone again. But, you know, do they bring back just the OG or they bring back 60 people,” he added.
Renner’s choice of “60” as the number of people that Marvel could bring together for a future film is interesting. Deadline reported yesterday that 60 is the number of characters being brought together for Avengers 5. Perhaps then, Renner knows more than he is letting on, and we will see Hawkeye again soon.
