‘Avengers 5’ Will Reportedly Feature More Than 60 Returning Characters and Marvel Wants Shawn Levy to Direct
With Deadpool & Wolverine tracking to become Marvel Studios’ first billion-dollar film since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, Kevin Feige and his team are hoping to keep director Shawn Levy around.
According to a new report from Deadline, Levy is Marvel’s top candidate to direct the next Avengers film, which is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.

Initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the film has undergone changes since presumed star Jonathan Majors was convicted of domestic assault earlier this year.
Levy Has Not Committed Yet
According to Deadline, Levy has been given the latest script, which was written by Michael Waldron. At this time, however, he has yet to tell the studio if he will take the job. As such, the studio is still planning to meet with other directors while they wait.

One impediment to Levy taking the job could be his busy schedule. Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy will presumably be involved in the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things in the role of both director and executive producer.

Levy has also been attached to a potential Star Wars project, though details on that project remain scarce.

Whether it is Levy or another director at the helm, Avengers 5 is setting up to be one of the studio’s largest productions ever. Sources told Deadline that more than 60 MCU characters could appear in the film, including Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), and Nebula (Karen Gillian).

Unlike the original Avengers films, Avengers 5 will seemingly be more of an ensemble cast. With production set to begin next year, we should hear more details soon.
