George Lucas Discuss the Current State of Hollywood and (Kind of) Defends the Marvel Cinematic Universe
As strange as it may sound, there is perhaps no one more qualified to analyze today’s box office than George Lucas.
While Lucas has largely stayed out of the spotlight since selling Star Wars, the filmmaker was in many ways a man before his time. Star Wars was the precursor to today’s obsession with cinematic universes, and the franchise remains perhaps the premiere tentpole franchise.

During a recent appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, Lucas was asked about Martin Scorsese’s assertion that superhero films were not “cinema.”
“Look. Cinema is the art of a moving image,” he responded. “So if the image moves, then it’s cinema. I think Marty has kind of changed his mind a little bit.”

Pulling on his own history, Lucas then recalled that when he began to pioneer the use of digital films, many directors (including Scorsese) believed he was making a mistake.
“There’s No Original Thinking”
While Lucas seemingly disagreed with Scorsese, the Hollywood legend did not exactly paint a rosy picture of the modern box office.

“The stories they’re telling are just old movies,” he said. “‘Let’s do a sequel, let’s do another version of this movie.’ There’s no original thinking. The big studios, they don’t have an imagination.”
Although Lucas’s point is well taken, I would be remiss not to point out that the current obsession today with sequels and trilogies is largely based on the template that Lucas created with Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

If not for Lucas’s impact, for good or bad, the current state of cinema would look very different.
Will Lucas Make a Comeback?
So, would Lucas consider rejoining the fray and making another movie? The filmmaker is adamant that he will not.

“No, I’m retired,” he confirmed. “The last one I did as a producer was a thing called Strange Magic, which is an animated film. So I was doing movies that I wanted to do rather than…I was financing myself and had my own studio. I am building a museum in Los Angeles. It’s keeping me very busy.”
