Marvel’s Head of Animation Discusses the Possibility of Creating ‘Spider-Man ’98’
Almost as soon as Marvel Studios announced that it would be reviving the 90’s classic X-Men: The Animated Series, fans began to clamor for the return of Marvel’s other 90’s animated classic- Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
With X-Men ’97 now firmly established as a hit and Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson appearing together in the series’ Season 1 finale, that clamor has now reached a fever pitch.
Marvel’s Animation Head Talks ‘Spider-Man ’98’
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Marvel’s Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, was asked about a potential Spider-Man ’98.
“It is amazing to see them back on screen together, I wish we could tell that whole adventure with Madame Web and figure out how exactly he did it! [laughs] Maybe one day, we as fanboys could certainly dream,” Winderbaum said.
The Marvel animation head is, of course, referring to the fact that Peter and Mary Jane appeared reunited at the end of X-Men ’97. The last time we saw the characters in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Peter was still searching for Mary Jane, whom he had last seen falling through a portal into limbo.
While it was great to see that Peter had found MJ by the events of the X-Men ’97 season finale, fans still never got to see what happened.
“I Don’t Want to Close the Door on Anything”
Although Winderbaum was fairly adamant that Spider-Man ’98 was not on the way, he was also unwilling to say “never.”
“There is always potential, right? I don’t want to close the door on anything. But I think that for now, for the foreseeable future, ‘X-Men ’97’ will own the 90s and how much we bring in guest stars or tell stories from other Marvel characters from that era is TBD, but it will be seen through that lens of the X-Men.”
John Semper Jr. Has Reached out
Interestingly, in a social media post on X, Spider-Man: The Animated Series creator John Semper Jr. revealed that his agent had reached out to Marvel about possibly reviving the series and got a similar response.
I’ve been asked a lot about a revival of my Spider-Man series after the cameos in X-Men. I had my agent reach out to Marvel to inquire about a reboot. This is the same answer we got. https://t.co/3x7IhUeEqq

With Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in development at Marvel Animation, it is likely that the studio does not want to muddy the water and release two Spider-Man animated series at the same time.
Still, with X-Men ’97 proving to be a much-needed hit for Marvel and fans still clamoring for the return of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Marvel should at least consider bringing the show back.
