Marvel’s Head of Animation Teases ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’
Now that Marvel ’97 has wrapped up its first season, fans are beginning to look ahead to what is next for Marvel Animation.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Marvel’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum, discussed what the animation unit has on the horizon.
In addition to What If…? Season 3, Marvel Animation is set to premiere two new series in the foreseeable future. The first is Eyes of Wakanda, which will tell the history of Wakanda through the War Dogs.

The other series on the docket is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (formerly called Spider-Man: Freshman Year), which will focus on Peter Parker’s high school exploits.
Taking Inspiration From the Steve Ditko Era
According to Winderbaum, the series will both impress and surprise audiences.
“I mean, ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ is amazing, to say the least,” Winderbaum says. “I think it’s really going to surprise people. It is very much like a cut from that Steve Ditko era of the comics. It’s Peter Parker back in high school just trying to make it work, take care of his aunt, completely broke, and having to be a superhero.”

“It’s so essentially Spider-Man, and what Jeff Trammell, the creator of that show, did, which I think people are going to love, is he built this ensemble of characters around Peter that you fall in love with. Similarly, just because it’s long-form storytelling, as those relationships brew when the stakes rise in that first season, things feel really tragic and dangerous, and pretty incredible. So, I love that show,” he continued.
A Different Peter Parker
While Winderbaum explained the general premise of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the specifics surrounding the show remain unclear.
What we know is that Spider-Man, as depicted in the series, will not be the same character that Tom Holland portrays in the MCU.

In 2022, Winderbaum noted that the character’s story “follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:] ‘Civil War,'” with Peter even “getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his department for the famous moment where Tony Stark is waiting for him to offer him the Stark internship and take him to Berlin.”
Because of a multiversal event, however, it is not Tony Stark who is waiting for Peter, but Norman Osborne.

While we don’t have a release date yet for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, it looks like perhaps the series will debut next year.
