‘Bluey’ Ascends While Taylor Swift Falls Out
The latest week of streaming ratings features a jaw-dropping performance, but it’s not from Disney…or Netflix, for that matter.
An Amazon Prime Video series about a postapocalyptic world has claimed the spotlight, but we’ve got plenty of Disney news, too.

During the most recent batch of Nielsen streaming ratings, Bluey has ascended once again, while Taylor Swift’s fallen out.
The Good News About Bluey

On April 14th, a new episode of Bluey entitled “The Sign” aired. That timing proved unfortunate for Disney on this week’s ratings.
I say this because the latest Nielsen streaming ratings cover the week of April 8th – 14th, which means the new Bluey episode barely counted.

Disney+
Disney+ got credit for just one day of its release, and while there was undeniably a rush factor, we won’t know the full extent for a bit.
We’ll learn just how much of a bump Disney+ gained from “The Sign” next week, but the early results are extraordinarily promising.
As a reminder, the last time I discussed Bluey, it claimed 1.079 billion minutes, a strong performance good enough for fourth place overall.
Then, “The Sign” arrived, and fans presumably prepped for it by bingeing a few old episodes, and the results speak for themselves.

Overall, Bluey was the second-most-watched program of the week, earning 1.394 billion minutes. That’s an increase of 315 million minutes.
You can understand why Disney doesn’t want Bluey to end, as well as why they’re rushing out minisodes this summer.

The only program that beat Bluey during the week in question was Fallout, which claimed 65 million viewers during its first two weeks.
That’s the scale we’re discussing with Bluey, which remains the most-viewed program on streaming overall in 2024.

Disney
As a reminder, this won’t be the last time this month that Bluey gets a new episode bump, either.
The show surprised its fans by teasing that “The Sign” may be the series finale, only to air a new episode a week later.
Return of Shogun?

The other day, I wrote about Disney CEO Bob Iger’s comments regarding Shogun. Let’s just say they were decidedly positive.
According to Iger, “(Shogun is) tracking as FX’s most-watched show ever on our streaming platforms.”

Perhaps more remarkably, Shogun is driving the most new subscriptions to a Disney streaming service since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
That story broke on Tuesday, and there’s already an update. Disney is toying with the notion of submitting Shogun in a surprise category.

The obvious choice for Shogun, a limited series based on a single book, would be as a limited or anthology series.
Instead, Disney may campaign with Shogun as a drama. What does that mean? We’re probably getting more stories involving Shogun characters.

I cannot say which ones because I don’t to spoil you about who survives what I’m now calling season one, but you get the point.
Shogun has proven so appealing on streaming and linear alike that Disney is planning more of it.

For the week, Shogun earned another 378 million minutes according to Nielsen, and I’m confident the actual number is much higher.
At this point in the season, Shogun had two episodes left. So, we’ll probably see it for at least another three weeks.
Disney’s Other Hulu Hits
As a reminder, we learned a couple of weeks ago that Nielsen had made a boo-boo with its streaming ratings.
Some Disney+ and especially Hulu programs weren’t being tracked correctly. Once Nielsen fixed the problem, some shows soared.

Three of the ones that performed the best were The Resident, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers.
During the week in question, The Resident earned another 930 million minutes, good enough for fourth place on the Acquired charts.

Hulu shares the release of The Resident with Netflix. So, many of those views probably come from Netflix.
However, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers are Hulu exclusives. For the week, they claimed 734 million and 679 million minutes, respectively.
Grey’s Anatomy, another joint Hulu/Netflix series, finished just behind Bluey with 1.093 billion minutes.
Other Hulu joint ventures, Criminal Minds and Law & Order: SVU, are shared with Paramount+ and Peacock, two of the lesser services.

For the week in question, Criminal Minds managed 601 million minutes, L&O: SVU was right behind it with 587 million minutes.
What we’re learning is that Hulu is the streaming service of choice for casually watching reruns of familiar shows with hundreds of episodes.
The Taylor Swift Fallout

This week’s surprise involves the Movies chart or, more specifically, what’s missing from it.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has fallen from the charts, roughly two months after its release on Disney+.

Taylor Swift
That’s definitely a quicker burnout than I would have expected, and I think I said as much here.
Still, I’ll reiterate a lingering criticism about Nielsen ratings. They don’t include smart devices, just television streaming. I presume that’s the explanation.

I will add that a person I trust on social media has posted data suggesting that Hamilton was a much bigger hit for Disney+ overall, though.
On the bright side, Wish held a bit better than I expected on its second week of streaming. The movie garnered 620 million viewer minutes.

Whether Wish remains on this list for an extended period will go a long way in determining how big a hit it is.
Disney’s only other title on the Movies chart this week is the ever-consistent Moana, which managed 270 million minutes.

So, overall, this was a strong week on streaming for Disney+.
