Simu Liu Thanks Fans, Confirms ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Is on the Way
When Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted that the company had “quietly shelved” films that it did not believe were working at the same time that he warned that Marvel needed to slow its output pace, many fans began to worry that some of the studio’s previously announced films would never see the light of day.
One film that was considered a candidate to have been shelved by many was the long-awaited sequel to 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shang-Chi managed to deliver a strong $450 million at the box office and rave reviews from critics. Almost instantly, Marvel announced that a Shang-Chi 2 was in development, with Simu Liu set to reprise his role as the titular hero and Destin Daniel Cretton to direct again.
Updates on ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Have Been Sparse
Since that time, however, updates have been few and far between, leading to speculation that the film had been canceled.
Luckily, earlier this year, Liu confirmed that Shang-Chi 2 was still a go. Rumors have it that the film will begin production next year.
In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Liu was once again asked if Shang-Chi 2 was in the works. This time, the actor gave a more elaborate response.
“You want me to lose my job, is that it? This is where I use all the mental gymnastics that I possibly can to answer this question, I will say this. It’s definitely happening. I should probably lead with that. People, whether it’s online or in person, ask me every single day and tell me every single day how much they enjoyed the first movie and how much of a moment it was. And I think there’s just so much goodwill, and I’m so deeply appreciative of that,” he said.
Thanking the Fans
Speaking about the fan support for the film and the messages he has received from fans, Liu took a moment to thank the Shang-Chi faithful.
“So please know that if you’ve ever sent me a message, if you’ve ever asked about a sequel or just approached or any which way, I really take it to heart, and I really, really appreciate it. I think I speak for myself and Destin [Daniel Cretton], our returning director, when I say that we’re so beyond excited to jump back in,” he concluded.
By the sound of things, fans have nothing to worry about, and we will soon see Shang-Chi’s story continue on the big screen. What a relief.
