After Three Tumultuous Years, Kim Godwin is Out at ABC News
After three tumultuous years as president of ABC News, Kim Godwin is stepping down from her role.
“I have decided to retire from broadcast journalism,” Godwin told staffers in a memo.
“I have been fortunate and blessed enough to have done almost every job there is in this business,” Godwin added. “But after considerable reflection, I’m certain it’s the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what’s most important for me and my family.”
ABC News Staffers Had Recently Voiced Their Complaints About Godwin
Moral at ABC News during Godwin’s tenure had reportedly plummeted during her time in the role. Last week, CNN ran a report highlighting the turmoil at ABC News.
Among their complaints were that Godwin took a hands-off approach to managing, had eliminated various talent-related division heads, and had appointed a poorly-received inner circle.
Perhaps more importantly, the network’s flagship morning show, Good Morning America, had begun to slip in the ratings.
Debra OConnell had Been Unhappy With Godwin
CNN reported that Debra OConnell, who was elevated to the role of president of News Group and Networks at Disney Entertainment in February, was reviewing Godwin’s performance.
At the time OConnell was installed in her new position, Godwin had just renewed her contract. Despite the new deal, the ABC News head was reportedly upset about being pushed further away from Bob Iger.
The newsroom’s unhappiness with Godwin had subsequently garnered the attention of OConnell, who had privately voiced her frustration with Godwin’s performance. Additionally, she was speaking to other industry executives about a possible Godwin replacement.
What’s Next?
Following Godwin’s exit, OConnell told employees that she would be overseeing ABC News “for the time being.”
“Since assuming this role in February, my goal has been — and will continue to be — to provide this team with the means necessary to build on our success and carry on the proud tradition of ABC News into a future full of opportunity and innovation,” OConnell said.
“I leave with my head held high and wish the entire team continued success,” Godwin wrote in her farewell note.
