Anthony Mackie Says ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Will Be a “Clear Reset”
After a disappointing 2023 at the box office, Marvel Studios has slowed down its pace of production and will only release one film this year- Deadpool & Wolverine.
Just because Marvel is being more selective in the content that it releases, however, doesn’t mean that the studio doesn’t have big plans going forward.
After a relatively quiet 2024, Marvel is set to kick things into hyperdrive again in 2025 with the release of Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts*.
The latter film will see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson assume the mantle of Captain America. This will clearly usher in a new era of Marvel storytelling.
“A Clear Reset”
In fact, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mackie revealed that the upcoming Captain America movie will be a point of demarcation in the MCU timeline.
“This movie is a clear reset. It really reestablishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be. I think with these movies, you’re getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Mackie explained.
Fans will likely love to hear Mackie compare the upcoming film to The Winter Soldier, which is considered by many to be perhaps the best Marvel movie ever. As Mackie says, it also laid the foundation for the stories that came after it.
Bringing Back Some Familiar Faces
In Brave New World, not only will audiences learn more about the kind of Captain America that Sam Wilson will be, but they will also be reintroduced to several long-forgotten characters from The Incredible Hulk. Among those reprising their roles from the 2008 film are Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, and Harrison Ford, who will be assuming the role of Thunderbolt Ross from the late William Hurt.
Clearly, those who have seen The Incredible Hulk will likely have a leg up on these characters’ backstories. Still, Mackie doesn’t believe the film is required viewing to enjoy Brave New World.
“The title implies that there’s a new, bigger enemy now; there’s a new frontier that we have to conquer. From Captain America: The First Avenger to Endgame, the enemy was always good versus bad. Now that we’ve conquered that, where do we go from here?” he explained.
“When the bad guys reappear, in what form are they reappearing? It is a new storyline with new characters, with new beliefs. And it creates a new idea of this new world that we’re going into.”
While Marvel still likely has some work to do to get its fans back to theaters, as a fan myself, I can’t wait to see what they are cooking up for Captain America: Brave New World.
The film will hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
