Maya Hawke Says She Cried While Auditioning For ‘Inside Out 2’
Following last year’s disappointing release of Wish, Disney will look to get back on track with the release of Inside Out 2.
The highly anticipated sequel to 2015’s smash hit Inside Out is set to hit theaters on June 14, 2024.
Inside Out 2 will continue the story of a now-teenage Riley and the emotions that live inside the young girl’s head.
In addition to returning emotions, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger, the film will introduce new characters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy as Riley’s teenage mind gets increasingly complicated.
Following Up on A Beloved Film
The original Inside Out was beloved for its nuanced take on growing up, memories, and mental health. The film resonated with fans and moved them emotionally in a way that few other animated films ever had.
As it turns out, auditioning for a Pixar movie is just as emotional as watching it sometimes.
Maya Hawke Cried While Audition For the Film
In a recent interview with Empire, Maya Hawke, who voices Anxiety in the upcoming film, revealed that she actually cried during the audition process.
“There’s something about this story and these characters that I think really brings fundamental truths about our experience to the surface,” she explained. “It’s so relatable, so emotional, so pure, that whether you want to or not, you use what you have and what you’ve been through.”
By the end of the audition process, Hawke says she was dying to play the part.
“It was an extremely desperate thing to do, but I think what people are looking for in audition rooms is passion. That it means something to them personally, and they’ll put pieces of themselves into it,” Hawke said.
The Role Hawke Had Been Waiting For
So far, through the early promotion of Inside Out, Hawke’s Anxiety has been the breakout star. According to the actress, she had an affinity for the character from the moment she set eyes on Anxiety.
“She was pitched to me with a picture of her,” she recalls, “and I was like, ‘YES, that’s ME! That’s the Velma Dinkley [of Scooby-Doo fame] part I’ve always dreamed of, with the orange and the skirt and stripes and the teeth!’”
Inside Out 2 will hit theaters on June 14, 2024.
