A New Documentary Will Chronicle the Creation of ‘A Goofy Movie’
If you were a Disney fan who came of age in the 1990s, then you undoubtedly remember A Goofy Movie. Based on the Disney Afternoon staple Goof Troop, the film aged up Max and PJ and put them in high school, where they dreamed of being popular.
Despite Max’s newfound desire for independence, and his longing to make a name for himself to impress Roxanne, Goofy forces him on a father-son road trip. Along the way Goofy and Max rediscover the bond that they had lost.
The film would also introduce audiences to a new cast of characters.
In addition to the aforementioned Roxanne, there was Principal Skinner, Bobby Zimmeruski (Pauly Shore!), and, of course, the “greatest rock star on the planet,” Powerline.
With its distinctly 90s setting and songs like “Stand Out” and “I2I”, A Goofy Movie earned legions of fans.
The Behind the Scenes Story of ‘A Goofy Movie’
As it turns out, however, not even the team behind A Goofy Movie thought that the film would be as big of a success as it was.
“In 2022, directors Christopher Ninness and Eric Kimelton set out to make a simple documentary about their favorite Disney film. Then they discovered the complex power of art, and how a character as silly as Goofy can mean so much to so many people. So begins the untold story behind that unlikely cult-classic, A Goofy Movie,” the documentaries website teases.
“This captivating account reveals how a team of untested young filmmakers took on the challenge of building their first feature around an iconic Disney character, without realizing the obstacles, clashes, and victories awaiting them. Through interviews with the key figures involved in A Goofy Movie’s creation, as well as rare, previously unreleased archival footage and stunning animation, Ninness and Kimelton’s film gets inside the studio’s inner workings and provides an unfiltered perspective on behind-the-scenes magic. It’s a must-watch for Disney enthusiasts young and old.”
Not Just A Goof will premiere at Wonderlands on Saturday, May 4.
