‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Sequel Series To Air on Disney+ Later This Year
Get ready to step back into the magical world of the Waverlys! Rumors of a reboot swirled earlier this year when news of a pilot episode had fans buzzing with excitement.
This week, Disney Channel gave an official series order to the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series, which will be executive-produced by original stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie.
According to Gomez, the new series — simply titled Wizards — is definitely NOT a reboot. “It’s going to be really fun and I was excited to bring the characters back,” she told late-night host Jimmy Kimmel in February 2024. “It’s not a reboot, it’s going to be a different version.”
Gomez has most recently turned heads for her role as Mabel on Hulu’s Only Murders in The Building.
More Magical Moments
The original Wizards of Waverly Place aired on Disney Channel from 2007 to 2012. The series followed the magical Russo siblings as they navigated typical teenage troubles and grappled with their magical abilities.
Wizards will focus on Justin Russo (played by David Henrie) and his non-magical wife and kids. Selena Gomez will return for a guest appearance as Alex Russo.

New additions to the Waverly world include Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Theile, Max Matenko, and Mimi Gianopulos.
The new series will reportedly follow a now-grown Justin Russo, who lives with his non-magical family and has forgone his magical abilities for a normal, mortal life. When his sister Alex shows up with a young wizard in need of training (Brown), Justin must tap into his magical roots once again.
When Will Wizards Premiere?
The Wizards pilot began filming in January 2024, and the series is set to begin production in April. While there is no word on an official release date, David Henrie has heavily hinted at a 2024 release.
