Disney Theatrical Group and the Situation Project Team Up To Bring Hundreds of Students to Broadway
Disney Theatrical Group and the Situation Project have teamed up to spread some Disney magic to hundreds of students on Broadway.
Inspired by the wonder of Disney, the Situation Project invited 375 New York City public school students to a special matinee performance of Aladdin to make some memories.
For most of the students, it was their first time seeing a Broadway show. The experience not only introduced them to the world of theater but also gave them new insight into the city they call home.
“I always liked Aladdin when I was a kid—my mom would put it on the TV and I loved it. I feel so happy to be here,” said Marcos, a student from MS 343.
“[Seeing Aladdin] live feels even better than in the films because you get to see them in person and experience how they’re feeling right in front of you,” said his classmate Dylan.
Cultural Experience Teach and Inspire
According to Situation Project, access to unique cultural experiences makes an impact that outlasts the school day. Studies have shown that engaging in the arts enhances students’ cognitive, critical thinking, and technical skills while fostering emotional development.
“There’s something profoundly magical about seeing a story unfold live in front of you. It’s not just about entertainment; it’s about showing these students what’s possible beyond their neighborhoods and screens,” said Damian Bazadona, founder of the Situation Project.
For Lauren Daghini, Director of Market at Disney Theatrical Group, there is an immersive power in live theater.
“Bringing Disney magic to life on stage offers a unique experience that complements the films. It allows students to engage with beloved characters in a new way, enriching their understanding and enjoyment of the story,” Daghini shared.
Lisa Mitchell, Director of Education & Audience Engagement at Disney Theatrical Group, echoed that sentiment.
“Live theatre is a shared experience, so suddenly the story becomes theirs. Seeing the magic unfold right before their eyes unlocks possibilities for young people. Whether they are inspired to pursue a career in the arts, become life-long theatergoers, or simply see the world in a new way, the experience is transformative.”
A Tribute to National Women’s Day
As the performance of Aladdin ended, the visiting students yelled and cheered for their favorite performers. After the curtain call, Sonya Balsara, the actress who plays Jasmine in the show, addressed the young crowd.
In tribute to National Women’s Day, Balsara invited dozens of women from the creative team behind Aladdin to the stage, giving them a moment to shine.
All in all, it was a magical day for everyone involved.
